VW Gol from Brazil...

Here is an interesting car for those that live outside of Brazil. Back in the late 70's and early 80's, the brazilian division of Volkswagen realized that it would soon start to loose market due to the Beetle's ageing design, so they decided to make a car that would substitute the Beetle but still be cheap and popular.

What they ended up with was the Gol, which is a bit of a mix of a Beetle and a German VW Golf.

As you can see by this fine example, the design was inspired by the Golf...

... and the engine is an air-cooled boxer engine from a Beetle! Noticed though that this example has a custom turbo system (these cars were never turbo'ed from factory) and also has non-factory wheels.

The real Herbie...

Here is the real Herbie. Not sure if this one has a mind of it's own like the movie character, but this one sure has the racing pedigree! If you have any more information on this Herbie, please let us know.
